Washington ( WDN) A delegation led by Somalia’s Prime Minister Omer Abdirashid Ali, who is currently touring the gulf oil rich country of Qatar, on March 17, 2015 has attended a bilateral business agreement between the two countries , in particular the signing of Qatar Airways to start flight to Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
“These landmark agreements in the education and aviation sectors signed today represent the aspirations of my administration to fast-track the socio-economic development of our country after many years of instability and will foster economic growth and employment opportunities,” said Prime Minister Omer.
The economic growth and the rise of income levels in Africa has created a growing and strong middle class with global trade and investment opportunities. East Africa is currently the regional leader in terms of GDP growth, coupled with growth in population calls for increasing demand in air travel.
Various international airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines and FlyDubai have recently opened new routes into Africa and in essence realized the importance of opening access to destinations that are largely underserved and have great market potential.
Turkish Airlines is thus far the only international Airline that flies to Mogadishu since Somalia’s central government collapsed in 1991.
The fierce competition for the East Africa market share and Horn of Africa in particular, has led to the planned merger of regional carriers Daallo Airlines and Jubba Airways which dominated the Somali airspace in the past, to position themselves for growth and sustainability to curb competition from International Airlines.
The signed agreement between Somalia and Qatar now paves the way for Qatar Airways to expand its presence to this growing, yet competitive market of East/Horn of Africa region.
