It is with great pain and sorrow that we announce the sudden departure of our colleague and friend Mr. Mohamed Burale Farah who passed away on Sunday 26 January 2014 in Addis Ababa where he served on the Board of  Directors for The Horn Economic and Social Policy Institute (HESPI), an independent, non-profit think tank and consultancy firm established in 2006 for the countries of the Horn of Africa in particular and developing countries at large.

Burale AHUMohamed was a Somali intellectual with an MSc in Water Resources (Irrigation and Drainage Engineering). He also completed several post-graduate studies in agriculture, water resources development planning and on-farm water resources management from USA Universities of Washington, Utah and Colorado.  After graduation, he worked for various local and international organizations like FAO in many countries around the world.

Mohamed will be remembered by many Somalis in Addis Ababa after the collapse of the Somali government where he was known to have helped many to cope with the new reality in Somalia. He was kind, generous and very helpful to all Somalis.

Apart from his professional work in many developing countries around the world, he will perhaps be remembered most for his role in the establishment of the Khatumo State of Somalia with five other colleagues such as Dr. Ali Isse Abdi, Dr. Ali Khalif Galaydh and Engineer Jama Abshir Adde. The 6 men were later known as the G6 or group of six which was later expanded to G11 and acted as a consultative Council for the Khatumo State of Somalia. Mohamed was the dynamo behind the group and will definitely leave behind a big gap that will be hard to fill.

Many Khatumites will remember him and his 5 other colleagues for the arduous long trek from Addis to Taleh, the historic city where Khatumo was born, a journey that was filled with hardship and risks. As Northern unionists, the secessionist regime of Somaliland tried block their safe return to their homes but fortunately failed to do so.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the immediate family Mohamed leaves behind and the larger Khatumo family that will miss him tremendously because of his tireless efforts to promote their just cause.

May the Lord Almighty forgive Mohamed for any trespasses and have mercy on his soul.

For Khatumo Consultative Council (G11)
